OFF ROAD TRAILERS
Using a trailer to go touring or on expedition is not only very common in South Africa and Australia, but becoming very popular in Europe.
Like everything in life, there are advantages and disadvantages. In Europe one has maximum speed limits, a few roads where their use is even forbidden and the fact that a tow vehicle with enough power is an absolute must. The plus is that one can fully equip a trailer and always have it ready for action, and not spend hours packing the gear into the vehicle. A well equipped trailer unit means that one does not have to spend vast amounts of money on preparing the tow vehicle, in fact all that one needs is the tow hitch! Not only are the maintenance costs very low, but a trailer can also be used in combination with many different vehicles. It can also be shared with friends and rarely needs to be replaced.
There are a vast number of products already on the market, ranging from normal trailers with a tent attached, to the proper self contained unit which has everything from the cooker to the kitchen sink. Most important is a proper chassis, good brakes and an axle axle allowing a more than adequate carrying capacity. If these criterion are all there, the trailer will need few repairs and be suitablle for use in all conditions.
We have not only constructed our own, very tough off road trailers, but also imported products from South Africa. At the beginning of 2014 we should have another delivery of various off road trailers. The simpler versions combine all the necessary equipment but sleeping is in tents on top or beside the trailer. The off road caravans offer all modern comforts including indoor sleeping accomodation. More on this topic, including specifications and prices when they arrive.
